Everything you need to know before your first clothing-optional experience — etiquette, expectations, and how to feel at home.
So you're curious about naturism. Maybe a friend mentioned it, or you stumbled across a clothing-optional beach on a trip, or you've simply been wondering what it would feel like to swim without a swimsuit. Whatever brought you here, welcome.
This guide covers everything you need to know before your first clothing-optional experience.
What to Expect
The most important thing to know: naturist spaces are overwhelmingly ordinary. People swim, sunbathe, read, play volleyball, have lunch, and chat — exactly what they'd do at any other beach or resort, just without clothes.
The second most important thing: nobody is looking at you. This sounds impossible to believe before your first visit, but it's true. In a naturist setting, the naked body quickly becomes unremarkable. People are there to relax, not to evaluate each other.
The Etiquette
Naturist etiquette is simple and consistent across most venues:
Always sit on your own towel. This is the cardinal rule. Bring a towel large enough to cover any surface you sit on.
No photography. Ever, in naturist areas, without explicit permission from everyone in the frame. This rule is taken very seriously.
Respect boundaries. Naturism is not sexual. Staring, making comments about people's bodies, or any sexual behavior is grounds for immediate removal from any reputable venue.
Cover up in clothed areas. Most venues have restaurants, bars, or reception areas where clothing is required. Keep a cover-up handy.
Your First Visit
For your first social naturist experience, I recommend a dedicated naturist resort or club rather than a public beach. Resorts have clearer rules, better facilities, and a more established community culture.
When you arrive, you don't have to undress immediately. Take your time, get comfortable with the environment, and undress when you're ready. Most people find the anxiety disappears within 20-30 minutes of arrival.
Finding LGBTQ+-Welcoming Spaces
Not all naturist venues are equally welcoming to LGBTQ+ visitors. Look for venues that explicitly state their LGBTQ+ welcome policy, and check reviews from LGBTQ+ visitors. This site's resort and beach listings include LGBTQ+ welcome ratings for exactly this reason.
The First-Timer's Checklist
- •Bring a large towel
- •Pack high-SPF sunscreen
- •Bring a cover-up for clothed areas
- •Leave your phone in your bag in naturist areas
- •Give yourself permission to feel awkward — it passes
- •Remember: nobody is looking at you
